What is Holi?

I went to Holi in Boise about a month ago. I had a great time, got a face full of color, and even made an adventure video about it (here).

But what is Holi? IMG_0139

Also known as the festival of colors, Holi is a Hindu religious festival started in India. It’s one of the most revered and celebrated festivals in India, and has now spread all over the world in Indian subcultures.

The history behind it involves multiple Indian legends, including the Legend of Kaamadeva, the Legend of Holika Dahan Date & Timing, and the Legend of Radha and Krishna. The faith in the legends, the gods, and tradition is what binds the people in a spirit of love and harmony in an otherwise divided society.

And that’s the main point of Holi: love and harmony.

The official Holi festival website says “The vibrancy of colors is something that brings in a lot of positivity in our lives and Holi being the festival of colours is actually a day worth rejoicing. Holi is a famous Hindu festival that is celebrated in every part of India with utmost joy and enthusiasm.” (source)

As for my personal experience, the place was so full of love and unity. We were all friends and family. Everyone, no matter what they looked like, what they believed in, who they were, was accepted and loved there.

Holi is important in Hindu culture, and I can understand why.

I would definitely love to do it again.

Hugs
